Attorney is another word for lawyer.
Most of us learn about lawyers on TV shows like Law & Order, where the only time people need lawyers is when they have done something wrong. That is not why kids get lawyers in custody cases. You have not done anything wrong.
In a custody case, everyone involved – your parents, the lawyers, the judge – is trying to figure out what is best for you. Before they make a decision, they want to know what is important to you.
The job of a children’s lawyer is to tell the judge anything you want him or her to know: any concerns you have, anything you would like to change or stay the same, how you are feeling.
You do not ever have to go to court and you do not ever have to talk to the judge. It’s your lawyer's job to do that for you, to be your voice in court.
