How does all of this work?

Your lawyer will need to get to know you so that they can learn more about what is important to you.  Usually that means sitting down and talking for a while, maybe a few times.

Your lawyer will never ask you to choose between your mom and dad – usually kids need relationships with both parents to grow up strong and healthy.

Anything you and your lawyer talk about stays between the two of you, unless you give them permission to tell someone else.  Not only will your lawyer not tell anyone else, the law says no one can force them tell.  Now, some of what you say to your lawyer the judge will need to know – but the lawyer will always talk to you about it first.

When the lawyer needs to talk to other people about you, such as your teacher, doctor or counselor, they will make sure you are comfortable with that before they do it.

Your lawyer will always be honest with you.  If you tell your lawyer what you want, they will tell you whether it is a good idea or what the judge might decide.

Above all, you are the number one priority – your safety, your health, your happiness.  Your lawyer does not work for either of your parents. Your lawyer works for you.
